The Art of Effective Delegation

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Being able to effectively delegate tasks to others is a very difficult and challenging management responsibility. Two scenarios commonly appear. One scenario has the Manager doing it all themselves. This is driven by the short sighted belief that they can do a much better, faster job. After all they think it's going to take more time than it's worth to explain to someone else how to perform the task.

The second scenario sees the manager leave everything to team without carefully considering if the person being delegated to is trained to do the task. Without training in delegation key management responsibilities are given to team members who are well intentioned but lacking in the proper context to make decisions.

Both scenarios create more problems than are solved. Tasks are only partially completed or poorly executed or the result is disgruntled clients and a demotivated team. Delegation skills can be learned but are rarely taught. Ensure staff remain motivated, contributing appropriate skills and developing new ones to manage and complete activities and projects successfully.
